2 Timothy 2:15 (Authorized King James Bible): "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
Why did the Holy Spirit prompt Paul to write this verse? It, the verse takes on a better understanding if taken in the complete context of the whole. If one hasn't I recommend reading the whole of the passage; 2 Timothy 2:14 and concluding with verse 26. But now to the subject verse.
It is given in three parts and in the order to be read, believed and worked.
- "Study to shew thyself approved unto God," We as believers and being in the body of Christ don't study to receive praise from God for our dedication to study, that being to know His word. But to know why we're dead to God, why He would accept us into His family, to make it possible to become His child with no effort on our part.
- "a workman that needeth not to be ashamed," the believer becomes ashamed or embarrassed when they make mistakes in their scriptural understandings, then when pointed out by another more versed in that particular verse are ashamed.
- "rightly dividing the word of truth." To understand that all scripture is given by God but not to all to practice what is read. God doesn't change but the way (dispensations, administrations) do change. One needs to ask God the Holy Spirit directly in faith what one is seeking to know, concerning the scriptures.
All scripture is given for our learning that by them, the scriptures, may have understanding, help in time of need, and comfort in our lives as we patiently wait for His soon appearing of our great God and Saviour, the LORD Jesus Christ.
So then why do most who claim to be in Christ have so many different beliefs and follow many different doctrines? "In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."
